Graduation Season has arrived! Like many of you, I love seeing all the graduation pictures, colorful caps and gowns, inspirational commencement speeches, and most importantly: All those people achieving their dreams! This year feels even more special to me because my daughter is graduating from college. What an incredible dream-come-true!
Dream Big—Then, Take All the Little Steps to Achieve It
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about dreams—and the commitment it takes to achieve them. Many years ago, the CEO of a company I worked for said something that has stuck with me ever since:
“When you keep your commitments on the little things—like showing up on time to your son’s game, being home at the time you said you would, finishing that task you promised—pretty soon your mind doesn’t know the difference between the little things and the big things. So, when you tell yourself you’re going to do whatever it is you want to do— big or small—your brain just automatically believes you can.”
I love this quote because I believe dreaming is really important. But the power behind dreaming is our commitment to achieve it. If we can train our brain to believe anything is possible—because we keep our commitments even with the little stuff—awesome things really can happen.
That’s what makes Graduation Season special to me. It’s so inspiring to see all those students—who committed to completing the little things every day, over several years—finally achieve their ultimate goal of graduating.
Celebrate the Accomplishment—Before Dreaming Up the Next Challenge
I can’t tell you how many friends have asked what my daughter plans to do after graduation. I can only imagine how overwhelming this question must be for all the students who are graduating from college this spring with no idea what their next steps will be.
Why can’t we just celebrate that they accomplished their dream? It’s a big, freaking deal! And the best part is that those students now know they can achieve what they set out to do. That next dream probably won’t feel so crazy because they’ve learned the discipline of doing all the little things it takes to build to the next, big thing.
I think this holds true for many big dreams we strive to achieve. Sometimes, we’re so quick to move on to the next challenge that we never really take the time to celebrate the accomplishment—and the countless little things we did to get there. My hope during this graduation season is to hear less of “What’s next?” and more of “Congratulations on accomplishing your dream!”
