Prior Loan Usage Instant Insight

Insight of the Month: Prior Loan Usage by Grade Level

Instant InsightsBy Michael Macias, Product Manager

Mobile-optimized data visualization of Prior Loan Usage among your students means you can see, forecast, report, and begin to resolve any issues immediately and seamlessly—no IT required.

This particular CampusMetricsSM Instant Insight calculates the average amount of total federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Direct Loans used by your students. Data is grouped into grade levels displayed from “1st Year/No College,” all the way to “Continuing Grad.”

What Aggregated Prior Loan Usage Can Tell You

Using this insight can help you determine if you need to implement more outreach about responsible borrowing.

As you can see in the screenshot above, the left portion displays trends in the total amount of prior loans used by each group. In most circumstances, you would expect to see the sums rise—just (hopefully) not at an exponential rate until graduation. If you see an alarmingly high amount of loan usage for first-year students—or a significant spike for one or more subsequent years—you may want to investigate the issue further and consider measures to help drive those levels down.

The right side of the data visualization screen shows overall average usage of loans, broken down by undergraduate and graduate students. If too many are hitting max aggregate, there’s cause for concern that students won’t have enough loans left to complete their degrees. This insight can help trigger further ideas about strengthening financial literacy programs.
