Houston Baptist University Empowers Staff and Students With Mobile FinAid


Easy, mobile, personalized financial aid platform assists the school with its “Project Day One” initiative.  

PHOENIX, November 29, 2016 —  Houston Baptist University (HBU) is the newest higher education institution in Texas to sign on with CampusLogic’s financial aid student engagement platform. School representatives say that implementing StudentFormsSM is already helping their students better understand—and navigate—the financial aid process.

Getting every incoming student financially cleared before classes start is part of the university’s sweeping “Project Day One” initiative, intended to improve retention by helping new students fully understand and comply with admissions and FinAid requirements.

“StudentForms is a game-changer for us,” says James Steen, Vice President of Enrollment at HBU. “We serve a high first-generation student population—and that’s a tough group to get financially settled by day one. Now, we’ve got a much more efficient, paperless process that really empowers our students, freeing up the Financial Aid office to actually counsel and advise students and parents, rather than hounding them for outstanding documents.”

Having a FinAid product that’s cloud-based and mobile, Steen adds, has made a big difference. “Today, every step in the process is transparent, easy for students and parents to understand, and right there in their hands,” he says. “It’s been pretty awesome so far. I’m thrilled.”

HBU is located on the southwest side of sprawling Houston—and as diverse as the city’s population, ranking among the top 50 most ethnically diverse colleges in the U.S. At HBU, seven financial aid advisors serve nearly 2,300 undergraduate and 900 graduate students whose ages skew toward the traditional 18- to 23-year-olds. A member of the Southwest Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the university implemented StudentForms in Fall 2016.

StudentForms automates FAFSA verification, professional judgments, SAP appeals, and c-code resolution processes. It also enables mobile document submission for students and provides a student engagement portal in which the entire verification process is managed digitally—facilitating student notifications, document collection, data validation, and school communication. Current StudentForms users report decreased verification processing times between 50 and 90 percent while eliminating paper-based workflows and improving student satisfaction. Automated student follow-up via SMS/text further decreases the cycle time and improves the student experience.
