Gratitude Is an Attitude, Here’s How to Turn it into a Verb

Chrisy Woll, VP of Customer SuccessSeems like you can’t have a blog in November and not talk about gratitude. And since living a grateful life might be one of the most powerful ways to live, I don’t mind being one of the many who will talk about gratitude this month.

Lots of people believe that living a grateful life is the key to living a happy life. I can’t say I disagree with that theory. But one thing I do disagree with is that gratitude is “only” a noun—and not a verb.

I believe that happiness comes from putting your gratitude into action.

Join the Gratitude Challenge

So, if you are like me and believe that gratitude needs to be a verb, consider taking on my Gratitude Challenge! The three most common things I hear people being grateful for are: Family and friends, health, and their jobs. If you find yourself being grateful for those three things, let me challenge you to make gratitude a verb—and put it into action.

The challenge, if you choose to accept, is to choose one action from each section below:

Family and Friends

  • Call somebody you haven’t talked to for a while—and tell them why you’re grateful for them
  • Send somebody a card—in the mail—to thank them for something they did for you
  • Put down your phone—for an entire visit with a friend
  • Tell somebody why you appreciate them
  • Take someone you love to lunch/dinner 

Health and Wellness

  • Go for a hike or workout—do something active to thank your body and brain for hanging in there with you
  • Take a meal to somebody who is sick or needs support
  • Meditate—remove negative thoughts; focus on the good things in life
  • Read a positive book
  • Forgive somebody

Job and Coworkers

  • Thank your co-workers/manager for being supportive
  • Do something hard that pushes you out of your comfort zone. It’ll make you more grateful for the easy days.
  • Perform a random act of kindness for somebody in your office
  • Give generously to somebody at work who’s in need
  • Encourage those who may be having a hard time to keep pushing toward their goals

Imagine a world in which we all took more action on the things we are grateful for. That seems like a world where we would all be more connected, happier, and peaceful.

The very quotable author, speaker, behavioral scientist Steve Maraboli says, “If you want to find happiness, find gratitude.” I’ve accepted the Gratitude Challenge, will you?
